A Problem Shared

May 2019

I understand people sharing stories of their battles with mental illness, whether it's to try and help others or to find support for themselves from people who have been through the same.

I understand people sharing that they're having a mental health crisis, either because they need help from the people around them or just that it feels less frightening not to be facing it alone.

I don't understand people sharing photos of self harm, or talking about recent suicide attempts as though it were something to be proud of. This romanticised idea that scars and damage will make you more lovable is at best bullshit, at worst dangerous. You are loved or not loved for who you are, every part of you. People worth having in your life will not care any more or less for you because of mental illness. And anyone who only pays you attention when you harm yourself is not a good person.
